About your Course​

This Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to give you the skills you need to work with, and support, children and young people in an educational setting.

​

During your studies you will cover a wide range of areas including communication, development, planning activities, monitoring and more.

You will also gain insight into how schools and colleges are structured and operate, health and safety legislation and the importance of safeguarding and child welfare.

​

By the time you have qualified, you will have gained essential knowledge that will help you support teachers and pupils/students in a variety of environments within the school.

​

This course requires learners to be working or on a practical placement for the duration of the course in a learning environment. This will allow you to put your learning into practice, but you will also need to demonstrate competence in both skills and knowledge to qualify.

Undertaking this course will build on your practical experience to make you a highly effective teaching assistant (or similar role). It will also serve as a platform for additional study to enhance your skills further.

The units are broken down for your here so that you can see what your qualification will include.  However, the assignments you complete have been designed so that you can complete multiple tasks together where possible and you will see a different number of assignments in your personal portfolio; you will still be completing the whole qualification.

Unit 1: Understand Schools and Colleges as Organisations

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know the different types of schools and colleges in the education sector

  • Understand the organisation of schools and colleges in terms of roles and responsibilities

  • Understand how schools and colleges uphold their aims and values

  • Know about the range and purpose of school and college policies and procedures

 

Unit 2: Understand Children and Young People’s Development

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand significant stages of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years of age

  • Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young people's development

  • Understand the potential effects of transitions on children and young people's development

 

Unit 3: Safeguarding Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Know about safeguarding the welfare of children and young people

  • Understand the action to take when children and young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures

  • Understand child protection procedures

  • Know about current policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection

Unit 4: Understand Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Work with Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the importance of promoting equality and diversity in a learning environment

  • Understand how to contribute to the inclusion of children and young people with special needs and disabilities

 

Unit 5: Support the Health and Safety of Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand health and safety legislation in a learning environment

  • Be able to contribute to health and safety in a learning environment

Unit 6: Maintain Relationships with Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand effective communication with children and young people

  • Understand positive relationships with children and young people

  • Be able to build and maintain professional relationships with children and young people and others in a learning environment

 

Unit 7: Support Positive Behaviour in a Learning Environment for Children and Young People

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand policies and procedures for promoting children and young people's positive behaviour in a learning environment

  • Be able to support positive behaviour

  • Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour

Unit 8: Promote an Effective Learning Environment

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to support the teacher in planning learning activities

  • Be able to support learning activities

  • Be able to monitor children and young people's participation and progress

  • Be able to support the evaluation of learning activities

Unit 9: Contribute to Teamwork in a Learning Environment

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand teamwork in a learning environment

  • Be able to contribute to teamwork

  • Be able to support the work of the team

Unit 10: Provide Displays in a Learning Environment

On completion of this unit you will:

  • Be able to plan displays for a learning environment

  • Be able to display information

Requirements

 

There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.

​

However, please note that you must have a placement or be working in a suitable educational setting. 

​

To successfully complete this qualification, every student must participate in real work experience.  It is recommended that your placement, or job role, will allow between 50 hours (minimum) - 200 hours. 

​

This placement can be either paid or voluntary, so long as it provides the necessary evidence that the student needs to pass the course and allows the learner to demonstrate their practice over a period of time. This qualification allows the placement to be in a school or a College but excludes:

​

  • After school clubs

  • Distance learning colleges

  • Pre-schools

​

Along with the first set of course materials, you will also receive a comprehensive course guide. This will outline the placement requirements, how to set it up and the type of activities that will be assessed, including examples of the paperwork that you will submit to your assessor for evidence.

Assessment

 

After each lesson, there will be a question paper which needs to be completed and submitted to your assessor for marking.

​

This method of continual assessment ensures that your assessor can consistently monitor your progress and provide you with assistance throughout the duration of the course.

​

You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper. The approximate amount of time required to complete the course is 321 hrs.

Qualifications

 

On completion of this course you will receive the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (RQF) qualification. This qualification is listed on the RQF (Qualification Number: 501/0031/2).
